The MDX-540 Users Manual says that the spindle belt on the MDX-540 has a life of 2000 hours. We have customers who have easily tripled that. But make sure you have a spare when you get into the higher hours so you will not be waiting on a belt to be shipped. 

Instructions come with the belt on how to change it. But we wanted to show you how simple it was by explaining the procedure below.

It takes about 5 minutes to change out the belt on your non ATC machine. First remember always unplug your machine when performing any kind of maintenance. Next you will simply run the belt off the pulley by manually spinning the pulley and pulling down on the belt, manually spin it until it comes off the pulley. Once removed put the new belt on much like you would put a chain on a bicycle. Which will be opposite what you did to remove the belt. Always put the belt on the larger pulley then slip the edge on to the smaller pulley, then manually spin the pulley until the belt come on.

It takes about 15 monutes and only requires the hex wrenches that come with your system. First remember always unplug your machine when performing any kind of maintenance. Next you will remove the 4 screws that hold the spindle to the z axis and remove it. Then remove the belt. Now you will slip the belt over the spindle, do not put it on both pulleys just make sure it is over the spindle and put the spindle back on. It is important to tighten the screws slowly and let the alignment pins rest on the bottoms of there holes. Slowly tighten the bottom screws and then the top screws, this will keep the spindle aligned correctly with the table. Once the spindle is re-installed you will  put the new belt on much like you would put a chain on a bicycle. Put the belt on the larger pulley then slip the edge on to the smaller pulley, then manually spin the pulley until the belt come on.
